Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a gentle, rhythmic hands on technique designed to encourage the movement of lymphatic fluid into and through the lymphatic system. It uses light, precise, directional movements rather than deep pressure. It is carried out with direct ‘skin on skin’ hand contact and no oil or lotion etc.

What does Manual Lymphatic Drainage feel like?

Manual Lymphatic Drainage is generally very gentle and relaxing. Unlike a traditional swedish, deep-tissue or sports massage there is usually very little pressure, and many people find the treatment calming. I often find clients falling asleep during their treatment. Following a treatment, you will usually feel less swollen and the skin will feel less taut. I find this especially so when arms and legs have been treated, clients often describe them as feeling lighter and easier to move.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage can help to support your normal lymphatic circulation, reduce feelings of heaviness or puffiness, and promote relaxation. It is also commonly used as part of post-operative care when appropriate and with suitable medical guidance.

I usually recommend a one hour appointment although I can treat for longer if it is deemed necessary.

How often should I have Manual Lymphatic Drainage?

This depends on your individual needs and goals. Some people benefit from occasional treatments, while others may be advised to have a course of sessions. I will discuss a suitable treatment plan with you at your first consultation based on your individual assessment and desired outcomes. For post Operative Recovery I would recommend budgeting for approximately ten treatments. Sometimes it will be more but sometimes you will require fewer.

Do I need to prepare for my Manual Lymphatic Drainage appointment?

It can be helpful to drink water before and after your treatment and wear comfortable, loose clothing. Your therapist will let you know if there are any specific preparations required. If you have questions that you want to ask. Write them down first so that you don't forget them.

Can I eat before Manual Lymphatic Drainage?

Yes. There is generally no need to fast before treatment. A light meal or snack beforehand may be more comfortable than having a very large meal immediately before your appointment.

Absolutely, yes. Much of the MLD that I carry out is incorporated into post-operative care, but only when appropriate for the individual and with clearance from the relevant medical professional/surgical team. The timing and technique will depend on the type of surgery and your recovery.

MLD may support the movement of lymphatic fluid and can be used as part of management for certain types of swelling. However, swelling can have many causes, so an assessment is important before treatment.

Is Manual Lymphatic Drainage the same as a regular massage?

No. MLD uses very light, specific and rhythmic movements designed to influence the lymphatic system. It is quite different from deep-tissue or sports massage. Other forms of massage can actually hinder lymphatic drainage rather than assist with it which is why it is always important to choose a suitably qualified and experienced therapist.

MLD should generally be gentle and comfortable. Although rare, if you do experience pain or discomfort during treatment, tell me so that I can re-evaluate your treatment.

Will I notice a difference after one treatment with Manual Lymphatic Drainage?

Accepted Answer

Most people notice changes such as feeling lighter or less congested after one session. For chronic lymphoedema and post operative swelling, several treatments will be required to reach an optimal result but I do generally find that clients notice accumulative improvement after each treatment.

Are there any reasons I shouldn't have Manual Lymphatic Drainage?

Yes. MLD isn't suitable for everyone. Certain medical conditions, infections, unexplained swelling, acute illness, and some cardiovascular or lymphatic conditions may require treatment to be postponed or avoided. I will carry out a thorough consultation prior to your first treatment and refer you to a healthcare professional whenever necessary.

I do not offer to MLD during pregnancy.

Can I  have Manual Lymphatic Drainage if I have cancer?

Accepted Answer

Generally, yes. MLD can be a very beneficial treatment for people with cancer. It can help to make you feel less swollen and less congested and is especially helpful following surgery.  It can be particularly useful where lymph nodes have been removed. The gentle and calming nature of MLD can also help you with the emotional aspects of cancer as well as with fatigue etc. It can be a very relaxing experience.

What should I do after my treatment?

Continue with your normal activities unless I advise otherwise. Keeping mobile and staying hydrated as well as allowing yourself some time to relax can be helpful. I will discuss additional activities/requirements at your consultation.

Is Manual Lymphatic Drainage a treatment for medical conditions?

Accepted Answer

MLD can form part of supportive care for certain conditions, but it isn't a replacement for medical diagnosis or treatment. If you have new, persistent, unexplained, or worsening swelling, you should seek appropriate medical advice first. I always require clients to consult with a healthcare professional before I treat new or unexplained swelling.

What should I tell my therapist before my treatment?

I will ask you about relevant medical conditions, recent surgery or procedures, medications, pregnancy, current symptoms, and any other concerns you may have. This helps me to determine whether MLD is appropriate and how treatment should be adapted.

What Should I Wear for Manual Lymphatic Drainage?

I always suggest that clients wear loose fitting and comfortable clothing to their appointment. If you have been given any compression garments, please wear them to at least your first appointment so that I can check it and assess it. Prior to your treatment, I will discuss what clothing will need to be removed (if any). Area’s that are not being treated will remain covered during your treatment and your dignity is always maintained throughout. I have a strict Informed Consent policy which means that nothing will happen that hasn’t been previously discussed and approved of by you. Your comfort, dignity and safety are always of paramount importance to me.

What is Informed Consent?

The NHS states that “For consent to be valid, it must be voluntary, and informed. The person consenting must have the capacity to make the decision”. Assuming that you are consenting purely because you have presented yourself for a treatment is not adequate. Prior to any treatment or assessment, I will discuss the process with you in order that you fully understand what I will be doing, how I will be doing it and why I will be doing it. I will also explain what you may experience during and after the treatment and what, if any, participation is required on your part. You will be given the opportunity to ask questions. Only once this process is concluded will permission be sought to continue with the proposed treatment or assessment. Be assured that you are free to ask questions or stop your treatment at any time if you are in any way uncomfortable with it. Your comfort and safety is always my paramount concern.
